One of the most overlooked aspects I have found individuals fail to  utilize is the social network hard-wiring of our brain. An excellent review of this subject comes from Harvard ProfessorMatthew Lieberman’s book Social. In this article we will look at utilizing the social regions of the brain to help stay motivate and achieve the health you have always desired.

Using the Social Brain

Lieberman states that the default state of the brain is social. When we are not deep in thought about work, or playing sports we revert to our social standing.

What is the gossip at work today?

Can I trust that guy?

I wonder if they like each other

This is why in the modern world we are dominated by staring at iPhones and Facebook. People want to know what is going on with other humans. Companies have utilized this to help connect an inner need of humans, the ability to stay connected and communicate. Knowing this is an important part of how the brain is hardwired we can leverage these tools to achieve successful results in the gym.

Social Pressure

Though this often gets negative connotations, we can use a positive social pressure to keep us Motivated at the gym. The old saying of you are who you surround yourself with is very true. A New England Journal of Medicine Study pushed showed an analysis of social networks that stated being in a network of individuals who are obese had a 57% increased chance of becoming obese. Therefore we must utilize the opposite!

Quote Of The Day: Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down.” –Oprah Winfrey

Stay Strong in the wild my friends,

If you or your friends are not regularly going to the gym, bring in a third member or hire a personal trainer to help build the habit of going to the gym. By having an accountability partner, you will “peer pressure” yourself and others to help make a positive change in your life.
